Pasting in a Component and Nothing Looks Right

  • Etch Basics

Scenario: You visited a repository of patterns and components, chose the one you like, copied and pasted it into your site, and nothing looks correct.

The ability to build and share patterns and components across websites is really powerful, but every once in a while, Etch hiccups on the pasting process. I have seen the CSS completely missing, partially added, or a small typo (missing bracket) cause it to fail. The easiest way to solve the problem (95% of the time) is to recopy and repaste. If that doesn’t work, turn on the overwrite option, just make sure all the CSS and JS are reapplied. After you paste it in, make sure to turn off the overwrite feature to prevent unintended mishaps in the future.

That didn’t work

If that process did not work, make sure there are no plugins or host settings preventing the pasting option or interfering with any JS functionality. If you had the item in place for a while and it suddenly broke, make sure an Etch update didn’t change the default behavior, or you didn’t inadvertently change the default styling (overwriting can fix this, but might break things you created).

If all else fails, reach out to the creator or the Etch Community.
